This original painting of “La Torre”, a watchtower in Joppolo, Calabria, Italy. Joppolo is an enchanting Italian “comune” on the beautiful Costa degli Dei in Calabria, southern Italy. Nestled on cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea it is perfect for anyone looking for peace and tranquillity. On the seafront is Lungomare, a sea-walk of several kilometres, looking out over the Golfo di Gioia with the Aeolian Islands and the island of Sicily in the distance – the perfect setting for a morning or evening “passaggiata”.

Torre di Parnaso stands on a rocky promontory at the southern end of Lungomare. Locally referred to simply as “La Torre” it has become a symbol of Joppolo despite physically being in neighbouring Nicotera. It is one of a coastal defence system of watchtowers along the Tyrrhenian coast built in the sixteenth century to provide early warning of attacks by corsairs.

I am a British contemporary fine artist creating powerful acrylic paintings inspired by the interaction of light, colour, and perspective in natural and urban landscapes. I am fascinated by nature enjoying woodland, fell and moorland walking which provide a wealth of inspiration for my painting. For me having the time to stop, look and fully appreciate all the wonders of nature –the wildlife, trees and flowers and the interaction of colours and light – is a remarkable gift. I regularly visit family in Italy and Australia both beautiful countries full of artistic inspiration – some of the most spectacular sunsets, landscapes, and seascapes you will see anywhere in the world. My primary medium is acrylics, and I am a member of the Altrincham Society of Artists and the Visual Artists Association. I sign my artwork Iannello, my mother’s maiden name in her memory.
