Stromboli, the volcano, is on the island of Stromboli, one of the Aeolian islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a volcanic arc off the north coast of Sicily. It is one of the four active volcanoes in Italy.
The island of Stromboli has an area of 12.6 square kilometres (4.9 square miles) and is inhabited with a population of around 500 in 2016. The volcano is active and there are constant minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea. The island is nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.

Walking in the fells of Cumbria has been a favourite pastime of mine for many, many years. Standing on a peak after a few hours steady climbing is a moment of achievement, peacefulness and tranquillity. I have tried to capture those emotions in this painting, particularly the tranquillity of being many miles and thousands of feet above the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Australia is a truly amazing and remarkable country with some of the most spectacular views and scenery to be found in the world. Beautiful sunsets are a frequent phenomenon and are so striking that it is impossible for them to be taken for granted. During a recent visit however, the weather was unseasonal and a little disappointing, colder than usual for the time of year and lacking evenings graced with magnificent sunsets. Given the circumstances I felt I had no option but to paint a landscape scene which is intended to convey a little of the sheer magic and magnificence of a beautiful summer sunset.

In this painting I was trying to capture a sense of unfettered freedom. A moment in time – the rider and horse at sunset on a beach without any cares or restrictions – in total harmony with nature and living in and for the present moment.
Original artwork 18 x 14 in – £250 unframed – framed from £300.

Eagle is the common name for a wide variety of magnificent birds of prey. The name does not denote a natural group but rather any bird of prey large enough to hunt sizeable prey, although the eagle in this painting looks to be struggling in its search for food. Eagles can be found in all types of habitat including cold regions and all parts of the world. Possibly the best known eagles are the golden eagle and the bald headed eagle.

Uncontrolled and unpredictable fires are one of the most common forms of natural disaster in many parts of the globe including Australia and California. Whatever name they are given – wildfire, bush fire, wildland fire or rural fire – they often cause damage to property and loss of life as well as having major environmental impacts. The potential consequences can be severe including health impacts from smoke inhalation, destruction of property, water, and soil contamination as well as major impacts on flora and fauna. Climate change and other human activities such as land-use change and wildlife suppression are major contributions to an increase in wildfires.

Today, 22nd April, is Earth Day celebrated each year to remind us of the need to protect our environment and to strive to live life in a more sustainable way and undo the damage we have done and are doing to our ecosystems. This painting of a mother and baby orangutan is intended to highlight the conflict between humankind and nature. The orangutan is critically endangered. Their rainforest habitat is disappearing at an alarming rate. For humans this is a double whammy – threatening biodiversity and accelerating climate change. Giclée fine art prints of this painting are available at the original size, 16″ x 12″ and also A4 and A3. All the profits from the sale of prints of this artwork will be donated to the Orangutan Foundation. Contact for further details.
