This original painting of “La Torre”, a watchtower in Joppolo, Calabria, Italy. Joppolo is an enchanting Italian “comune” on the beautiful Costa degli Dei in Calabria, southern Italy. Nestled on cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea it is perfect for anyone looking for peace and tranquillity. On the seafront is Lungomare, a sea-walk of several kilometres, looking out over the Golfo di Gioia with the Aeolian Islands and the island of Sicily in the distance – the perfect setting for a morning or evening “passaggiata”. Torre di Parnaso stands on a rocky promontory at the southern end of Lungomare. Locally referred to simply as “La Torre” it has become a symbol of Joppolo despite physically being in neighbouring Nicotera. It is one of a coastal defence system of watchtowers along the Tyrrhenian coast built in the sixteenth century to provide early warning of attacks by corsairs.
