An original painting of Italian volcano Stromboli. Stromboli, the volcano, is on the island of Stromboli, one of the Aeolian islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a volcanic arc off the north coast of Sicily. It is one of the four active volcanoes in Italy.
The island of Stromboli has an area of 12.6 square kilometres (4.9 square miles) and is inhabited with a population of around 500 in 2016. The volcano is active and there are constant minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea. The island is nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.
