The Vulnerable Koala: An Acrylic Painting Story

This acrylic painting was inspired by an encounter at Soldiers Point, NSW, where a koala was attempting to cross a busy main road toward the bush on the far side. Oblivious to the traffic around it, the koala moved with a calm, unhurried presence—so still and inwardly focused it seemed almost detached from the danger it faced.

I stopped the traffic and carried the koala across the road. Once set down, it ambled away without urgency, eventually climbing a nearby tree with slow, deliberate movements. There was no panic or resistance—just a quiet, dreamlike composure, as if the world of cars and noise barely registered.

The painting captures that moment of vulnerability and calm: a creature entirely at ease within itself, even when surrounded by risk. Against the soft green ground, the koala appears grounded yet distant, embodying both resilience and fragility, and reminding us how easily such moments can pass unseen—or end differently—without human intervention.

I am a British contemporary fine artist creating powerful acrylic paintings inspired by the interaction of light, colour, and perspective in natural and urban landscapes. I am fascinated by nature enjoying woodland, fell and moorland walking which provide a wealth of inspiration for my painting. For me having the time to stop, look and fully appreciate all the wonders of nature –the wildlife, trees and flowers and the interaction of colours and light – is a remarkable gift. I regularly visit family in Italy and Australia both beautiful countries full of artistic inspiration – some of the most spectacular sunsets, landscapes, and seascapes you will see anywhere in the world. My primary medium is acrylics, and I am a member of the Altrincham Society of Artists and the Visual Artists Association. I sign my artwork Iannello, my mother’s maiden name in her memory.
