Still Standing

This painting captures the quiet resilience and isolation of the Australian outback with warmth and authenticity. The weathered corrugated-iron shed stands as the focal point, its worn timber walls and rusted roof telling stories of time, hardship, and survival in a harsh landscape. Rather than appearing abandoned, the structure feels deeply rooted in its environment — a reminder of the enduring connection between people and the land.

The sweeping dirt track draws the viewer’s eye into the distance, creating a sense of journey and vast openness that is characteristic of rural Australia. The rich ochre tones of the road contrast beautifully with the cool sky and dense green scrub, evoking the heat, dryness, and rugged beauty of the bush. Soft brushwork in the clouds adds movement and lightness overhead, balancing the earthy solidity of the foreground.

There is also a strong sense of nostalgia in the scene. The old barrel resting beside the track and the unkempt grasses suggest a place shaped by years of use and gradual decline, yet still alive with memory. The composition celebrates simplicity — everyday rural life transformed into something poetic through colour, texture, and atmosphere.

Overall, the work conveys both solitude and serenity. It reflects the uniquely Australian character of the outback: resilient, weathered, expansive, and quietly beautiful.

I am a British contemporary fine artist creating powerful acrylic paintings inspired by the interaction of light, colour, and perspective in natural and urban landscapes. I am fascinated by nature enjoying woodland, fell and moorland walking which provide a wealth of inspiration for my painting. For me having the time to stop, look and fully appreciate all the wonders of nature –the wildlife, trees and flowers and the interaction of colours and light – is a remarkable gift. I regularly visit family in Italy and Australia both beautiful countries full of artistic inspiration – some of the most spectacular sunsets, landscapes, and seascapes you will see anywhere in the world. My primary medium is acrylics, and I am a member of the Altrincham Society of Artists and the Visual Artists Association. I sign my artwork Iannello, my mother’s maiden name in her memory.
